geneticXchange and Sandpiper Data Systems team up to solve the petabyte problem for Biotechs

Menlo Park, California, Nov. 8, 2001 - With the biotech industry now coming to grips with what's being called The Petabyte Problem, geneticXchange, maker of the K1 System Data Integration Middleware Platform, and Sandpiper Data Systems, leading designer and implementer of strategic, large scale enterprise storage management solutions, have signed an agreement to deliver the underlying architecture that will support life science research with data requirements exceeding a petabyte of capacity (1,024 terabytes or 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes).

Together, the companies are introducing their Data Integration and Scalability Assessment.

"What's needed is an industrial strength infrastructure for industrial strength biology," says Jeff Edwards, geneticXchange President. "Data itself has become mission-critical and the massive amount of it is overwhelming existing infrastructures. And I'm surprised how great a gap there is between what the biotech companies need and what they're getting from mainstream IT vendors. Our middleware platform allows this data to be accessed and integrated, but the infrastructure must absolutely include a world class data management and movement scheme. That's why we've teamed up with Sandpiper."

Sandpiper Data Systems is one of the world leaders in the design and implementation of high availability, distributed and scalable storage systems. The company's expertise has already been translated into best practices throughout the financial, banking, manufacturing, telecommunications, insurance, transportation, service and government sectors.

"Life science research is producing data at what might be called an alarming rate," says Sandpiper Principal, Brad Bruhahn. "So we asked some biotechs if they were experiencing exponential storage growth? Is storage automation fully implemented? Do they now need a distributed architecture? And are your storage costs getting out of control? The answers were almost uniformly, 'Yes.' We also found that biotechs and their customers are dealing with data across functional domains. And because geneticXchange provides the only embeddable middleware platform that can scale and integrate this data, it makes sense for us to team up with them."

The Data Integration and Scalability Assessment provides an independent and brand-agnostic data management, movement and integration architecture. The assessment will pinpoint a biotech company's data bottlenecks and storage needs and includes a rough implementation plan with estimated costs.

"The new revenue driver will be a company's ability to deliver meaningful information a scientist can turn into knowledge. And that will require more and more data from the rapidly growing functional domains and sources. We know The Petabyte Problem is just the beginning." Mr. Edwards smiles. "Brad and I have already pointed an eye toward solving the not-too-distant Exabyte Effect."
