Applied Biosystems Signs Global Reseller Agreement with geneticXchange for discoveryHub™ Middleware Technology

FOSTER CITY and MENLO PARK, CA, July 30, 2002 - Applied Biosystems Group, an Applera Corporation business, and geneticXchange, a provider of data access and integration solutions for the life sciences, announced today that they have signed a customer relationship and worldwide reseller agreement by which Applied Biosystems will resell discoveryHub™ software from geneticXchange through its Rapid Integration Solutions (RIS) program. discoveryHub™ software is expected to accelerate and enhance the drug discovery process for RIS customers by alleviating data integration and analysis bottlenecks. This powerful tool extends the breadth of RIS capabilities by enabling scientists to conduct rapid search and query operations on biological data derived from Applied Biosystems instruments and software.

The Applied Biosystems RIS program relies on state-of-the art software and superior professional services to deliver the informatics solutions that are required for laboratory integration and automation. RIS provides tailored systems to meet the specific requirements of researchers who can choose the tools best suited to their specific applications, from sample management and tracking to analysis and database searching. RIS systems integrate data from a variety of instruments and information sources, both public and proprietary, into a laboratory's preferred data analysis software packages. These integrated systems, which are ideal for finding relationships and correlations that might otherwise be overlooked, result in greater data security and improved data management.

"We have a long history of providing integrated discovery platforms to our customers, and discoveryHub software from geneticXchange adds a new dimension to our capabilities with fast, seamless data access and integration from virtually any source or instrument," said Clifford Baron, Director of Global Services and Solutions at Applied Biosystems. "Our companies share a common goal-to deliver flexible yet powerful solutions, which solve critical problems in the drug R&D process and support accelerated discovery."

"We are very excited to be collaborating with Applied Biosystems to bring innovative new capabilities to the market that help solve the data integration challenge and produce an immediate and tangible impact on drug R&D productivity," said Brian Donnelly, CEO of geneticXchange. "As a leader in the life sciences with a large customer base, Applied Biosystems can provide discoveryHub software with maximum market exposure."

The enormous explosion in both volume and complexity of life science data now available to researchers and scientists has created unprecedented opportunities for new drug discovery. However, the industry is now bottlenecked by a lack of tools to quickly and efficiently access, integrate, and analyze this data. discoveryHub software from geneticXchange is at the heart of this IT-life science convergence, offering an industrial-strength software solution for real-time data integration of virtually any life science data source.

Key features of discoveryHub software includeSQL middleware architecture, which works alongside existing IT infrastructures to extend and enhance in-house solutions without force-fitting a "canned" solution. The software is also easily configurable for quick access to life science data sources. Lightweight wrappers can be created in less than a day to add external web sources, biochip data, LIMS, or internal databases to the custom integration mix. Additionally, the software provides real-time data access. "Live" SQL queries can be run to join both remote sources and inside-the-firewall, secure systems, combining federation and warehousing as needs demand. discoveryHub software also simplifies data loading-high-throughput wrappers load GenBank records and other large volumes into Oracle and other RDBMS efficiently.
