Genome Institute of Singapore selects the geneticXchange K1 Data Integration Middleware Platform

Menlo Park, California, Jan. 23, 2002 - geneticXchange today announced that The Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) has chosen the K1 Data Integration Middleware Platform System as the core support infrastructure for its biological data integration needs.

GIS sees K1 as the key component to the success of reaching its goals in answering the post-sequence, functional genomic questions to advancing individualized medicine.

GIS is a center for genomic discovery and focuses on integration of technology, genetics, and biology towards the goal of individualized medicine. GIS is one of the key programs in the Singapore government's US$3 billion biomedical sciences initiative. The Institute will integrate academic and industrial capabilities employing a broad range of disciplines (including biomedical scientists, clinical investigators, and computer scientists) to focus on post-sequence, functional genomic questions.

The powerful K1 Data Integration Middleware Platform solves the problem facing professional bioinformaticians working to create custom software discovery solutions. K1 is a flexible and embeddable query platform that obviates the need for costly hand coded workarounds. As a middle-ware platform, K1 was built from the ground up to allow any new complex data source or algorithm to be wrapped into custom discovery solutions very quickly so that cross domain integration can finally become a reality.

"geneticXchange believes that the current drug discovery process is "broken", in large part because of the inability to let researchers synthesize critical new information from any data, anywhere, seamlessly.", says Brian Donnelly, Chairman & CEO of geneticXchange, "Our mission with K1 is to make fixing that process a reality, and we are proud to be providing this solution for GIS."

"We are very excited about our collaboration", said Edison Liu, Executive Director of GIS and, "We are pleased to be working with geneticXchange in advancing bioinformatics. The Genome Institute of Singapore works at the intersection between cell and medical biology and genomics. At this interface, we need tools to integrate knowledge-databases in a facile manner. geneticXchange provides us with that enabling technology."

"We are extremely thrilled to be providing solutions to The Genome Institute of Singapore," said Jeff Edwards, President for geneticXchange. "It is an exciting time in the biotech industry. There is a tremendous amount of complex data that is dispersed in various heterogeneous formats. And the need to have a middleware platform that can handle this data is a necessity. The K1 System is the leader in this space of biological data integration at an enterprise level."

About The Genome Institute of Singapore

The Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) is the flagship programme for Singapore's $3 billion USD Biomedical Sciences Initiative. This initiative was the result of a ministerial decision to make the life sciences the fourth pillar of Singapore's economy after Chemicals, Engineering and Electronics. Launched in May 2000 and initially called the Singapore Genomics Program, the programme changed its name to reflect its expanded institute status. Dr. Kong Hwai Loong of the National University of Singapore was appointed the interim Director. In January 2001, Dr. Edison Liu then Scientific Director of the Division of Clinical Sciences at the National Cancer Institute was named its first Executive Director assuming the helm of the GIS on March 10, 2001.
