geneticXchange K1 Data Integration Middleware Platform provides solid foundation for Genomics Collaborative's new Tantalus database
Menlo Park, California, Feb 12, 2002 - geneticXchange today announced that Genomics Collaborative, Inc. (GCI) has licensed the K1 data integration middleware platform for its Tantalus database. GCI's Tantalus database is designed to mine the scientific literature to provide information of 'disease state' versus 'gene symbols' by aggregating data and information from distributed public and private domain sources. The K1 System is a foundation for complete biological data acquisition and integration middleware platform that can handle complex data structures from multiple data sources.
Brent Richter, Director of Bioinformatics at Genomics Collaborative Inc said, "Using the K1 system significantly reduced the amount of resources required to build and maintain Tantalus, and it facilitates scientific productivity at GCI. K1 enhanced our ability to develop the system, access information from their source websites and databases, and to create production software integrated with the rest of our informatics architecture in a very short time. This technology represents another step in continuing to advance GCI's lead in clinical functional genomics."
"We are very excited about providing part of the informatics infrastructure for Genomics Collaborative to help them in achieving their goals of discovering novel therapeutic and diagnostic products for the prevention, prediction and treatment of diseases" said Jeff Edwards, President and COO of geneticXchange.
The integration of the scientific literature with genomic, clinical and other biological information is necessary to generating and tracking scientific insights and in gene discovery. GCI has leveraged the K1 System to develop Tantalus, an application system that integrates biological data and the scientific literature. This complete system allows GCI scientists to have a fully integrated view of the genes involved in complex diseases mined from the scientific literature. The K1 Data Integration Middleware Platform System comes ready with drivers that access live, public and on-line biological data in real-time, solving the problem of having to create custom software discovery solutions, and it provides a flexible and embeddable query platform that obviates the need for costly hand coded workarounds.
As a middle-ware platform, K1 was built from the ground up to allow any new complex data source or algorithm, to be wrapped into discovery solutions very quickly so that cross domain integration can finally become a reality.
About Genomics Collaborative
Genomics Collaborative, Inc. ("GCI") is a functional genomics company with a clinical approach to discovery, focused on developing high value, proprietary intellectual property on its own account and in collaboration with bio-pharmaceutical companies and academic medical centers. To address a critical bottleneck in genomics-based drug discovery, GCI has built and maintains Global Repositoryä, an unparalleled, large-scale resource of appropriately consented clinical research material, including human DNA, sera, and snap-frozen tissue samples, linked to detailed medical information collected from patient populations worldwide. The Company has prospectively enrolled over 100,000 patients in Global Repositoryä, and patient recruitment continues in cardiovascular disease, inflammatory disorders, metabolic disorders, various cancers, and other disease states. GCI applies a suite of high throughput genomic analysis tools in research conducted leveraging the assets of Global Repositoryä, placing the Company at the forefront of next generation target discovery and validation. Pharmaceutical researchers are able to utilize GCI's Global RepositoryTM via the GCI AccessTM program.
Other previously announced GCI Access customers include Wyeth, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Merck and Co., Pharmacia Corp., and others.
GCI also offers commercial DNA and tissue banking services for collecting, processing and storage of biomaterials for industry, academia and governmental agencies. The Company's web address is www.genomicsinc.com.
